Imam Muslim was born in 202 or 206 H (819 or 821 CE) in Nishapur, a town of Iran. Imam Muslim belonged to the Qushair tribe of the Arab clan Rabi'ah. Imam Muslim is Abul-Hussain `Asakiruddin Muslim bin Hajjaj AlQushairi An-Naisaburi. Sunni Muslims regard Imam Muslim collection as the second most authentic of the Six major Hadith Books.Sahih Muslim is a collection of sayings and deeds of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), also known as the sunnah.The reports of the Prophet's sayings and deeds are called ahadith.Imam Muslim laboriously collected 3,00,000 Ahadith, but after a critical study, he selected only 4,000 Ahadith for this collection.Imam Muslim teachers included Ishaq bin Rawaih, Ahmad bin Hanbal, Ubaidullah Al-Qawariri, Qutaibah bin Said, Abdullah bin Maslamah, Harmalah bin Yahya,Imam Bukhari. Imam Muslim students are Abu Hatim Razi, Musa bin Harun, Ahmad bin Salamah, Abu `Isa Tirmidhi, Abu Bakr bin Khuzaimah, Abu `Awanah and Hafiz Dhahbi.Imam Muslim has to his credit many other valuable contributions to different branches of Hadith literature, and most of them retain their eminence even to the present day.Amongst these Kitab al-Musnad al-Kabir 'Ala al-Rijal, Jami' Kabir, Kitab, al-Asma' wa'l-Kuna, Kitab al-Ilal, Kitab al- Wijdan are very important.Imam Muslim's collection is recognized by the overwhelming majority of the muslim world to be one of the most authentic collections of the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW).Imam Muslim has taken great pains in connecting the chain of narrators. He has recorded only that hadith which, at least, two reliable tabi'in (successors) had heard from two Companions and this principle is observed throughout the subsequent chain of narrators.He was born in a distinguished family of Arab Muslims in Khorasan which. was a famous town of Russia.His forefathers occupied prominent positions during the time of the four Caliphs.We say that an authentic Hadith is one, which meets the principals of authentication of Ahadith.It does not matter whether it is written in Muslim, Bukhari, Tirmidhi or Abu Dawud, or Muwatta of Imam Malik.Imam Muslim died at the age of fifty-seven years in 261 H (875 CE) and was buried in the suburbs of Nishapur.
